Doubling Back

...or, how I knew I was getting older

​​Dear Friends,

One point in our hike a couple of weeks ago, my kids and I crossed the stream to get to the other side and climb up some boulders.  As they do, my boys hopped across the rocks like little gazelles, no worry or anxiety about falling in the water or getting shoes wet.  Rock by rock they hopped until they got to the other side.

I was not so carefree...I have reached the age where I am not so carefree.  I looked at the rocks, and chose my path...and then realized I wasn’t going to be able to make it one way, so I doubled back and went another way and another, until I got across the creek without falling in (this time!).  

I was thinking as I jumped from rock to rock, about how often in life we must double back from the way we were going previously.  It’s not failure on our part, but there are times when we go one direction and just realize that way is the wrong way, and we have to turn around and head another direction.

As I crossed those rocks, I was thinking about how even though we might know in our heads that doubling back and changing direction isn’t failure on our part, how we often take that need to switch directions as failure.  If someone else in our lives came to us to tell us about how they had to double back and switch directions, we would tell them they didn’t fail, it’s just part of life.  Even though we can see that we hold others with grace, how often do we hold ourselves with the same grace as we hold those around us?  If you’re like me, not as often as we should.

May we, this week, hold ourselves with a little more grace when we inevitably have to double back and change directions on this journey we’re on.  May we hold ourselves with grace.
